The Biz: Is Katie Couric Headed to Daytime?

Katie Couric

It's looking like Katie Couric's future will be in daytime TV. The CBS Evening News anchor, whose contract expires in June, is being courted by the syndication arms of both CBS and NBC Universal for a daily daytime talk show, according to people familiar with the discussions.

The companies are enhancing the offers with additional elements. At CBS, Couric would remain part of the news division's 60 Minutes; at NBC, she would have a big role in the coverage of the 2012 Summer Olympics. "Both options are very real," says one Couric associate.

Many CBS News insiders believed Couric would take on a syndicated show after extending her deal with CBS Evening News through the 2012 presidential election — at a salary well below her current $15 million per year. That scenario, says one insider, is now considered "unlikely."

If Couric does leave, 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley is the overwhelming internal favorite to take over the evening news.
