Minnie Mouse ad campaign
Celebrities including Virginia Madsen, True Blood's Kristin Bauer van Straten and Disney heiress Abigail Disney are speaking out against a planned Barneys holiday ad campaign that features an "emaciated" version of Minnie Mouse.
The celebs are among the thousands of supporters who believe the image promotes unhealthy body image issues among young women. More than 125,000 people have signed a petition on Change.org asking Barneys to scrap the window display and "return Minnie Mouse to her normal figure," according to a press release.
"There is nothing wrong with tall thin women. There is something wrong with changing a beloved children's character's body so that it looks good in a dress that almost nobody looks good in - adding to the tremendous pressure on young girls and women to attain Photoshop perfection," writes Ragen Chastain, a positive body image blogger and dance teacher who spearheaded the petition.. "Girls have enough pressure to be thin, now the beloved Disney mouse of their childhood has to add to the message that the only good body is a tall, size 0 body? Enough already."
Emails to Barneys were not immediately returned.
Do you agree that Barneys should cancel the campaign?
