Bachelor's Jason and Melissa Say They Broke Up Before Final Rose Taping
The Bachelor, Melissa, Jason
If you're mad at Jason Mesnick for dumping his fiancée on the air, you can stop: Both Mesnick and ex Melissa Rycroft now say they broke up before the taping of The Bachelor: After the Final Rose.
Of course, you now can fire up the ol' outrage over the fact that what we watched Monday night wasn't a breakup at all, but rather a relationship post-mortem presented to viewers in a way that made it look like a breakup.
Mesnick and Rycroft say in separate interviews that the relationship ended before the taping. Rycroft also confirmed that those widely circulated post-taping e-mails between her and Mesnick are real.
"Melissa definitely knew before going on," Mesnick told MomLogic.com. "I mean, our last conversation was: 'Are you gonna to wear the ring? Because you know we're not together.'
"I think that she probably had some hopes still that maybe I was gonna change my mind," he added, "'cause she was really upset. We didn't talk a couple of days before we shot [After the Rose]. And that's OK."
Rycroft, meanwhile, says the only thing that caught her off-guard was Mesnick telling her he wanted to pursue a relationship with runner-up Molly Malaney — which he up and did as soon as Rycroft left the After the Final Rose set. Mesnick and Malaney have been dating for about six weeks.
"I knew on the night [of] After the Final Rose I wasn't getting dumped. We had already ended the relationship, and that was mutual," Rycroft said on Thursday's Ellen DeGeneres Show. "I repeatedly asked [Jason], 'Is Molly involved in anything? Am I going to be blindsided by anything? Is there anything you want to tell me?' And he said, 'No, gosh no.' And the second I went out on that stage, he goes, 'P.S., it is Molly,' and I went, 'Bastard.'"
Rycroft believes Mesnick and Malaney were in touch while she and Mesnick were engaged.
"I know there had been at least one contact ... where he was 'checking on her,' so it was just in the back of my mind," Rycroft said. "I would casually ask, you know, 'Are you talking to her? Have you talked to her? Tell me, just be honest' ... He kept saying no."
Rycroft also told DeGeneres she's now dating someone she's known for about two years, saying, "He has been my biggest rock and supporter throughout this whole process. He's become my best friend."
Maybe that's why she didn't want to be the new Bachelorette.
What do you think? Do you feel manipulated by Monday's non-breakup breakup? Or happy Mesnick didn't break the news to Rycroft on-air?
