Wanna audition for NBC's America's Got Talent? There's an app for that.
NBC is set to announce the launch of a new America's Got Talent app that will allow users to upload their audition videos directly to YouTube via an iPhone or Android device. NBC says the app is the first of its kind for a competition reality show.
"This process throws a wider net across America," says NBC alternative programming executive vice president Paul Telegdy. This also represents the second year in a row that America's Got Talent has accepted online auditions via YouTube, which is how season five finalist Jackie Evancho got on the show.
Prospective contestants can start uploading their videos today, and through June 9, via the audition app or directly at www.youtube.com/americasgottalent. They can also do the same at www.nbc.com/agt or www.facebook.com/nbcagt. After the deadline, producers plan to select 20 online finalists, with YouTube users selecting their favorite. The top vote-getter automatically gets a slot on the YouTube-branded quarterfinal episode on NBC.
Since being discovered via YouTube and America's Got Talent, 10-year-old Evancho signed a recording deal with Columbia Records and hit No. 2 on the Billboard album chart with her first album, O Holy Night (selling more than 1.5 million copies).
