House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black, Masters of Sex and The Americans were among the first-year television shows that made AFI's list of the top 10 TV programs of the year.
This marked the first year a Netflix original series made the list. Despite the good news for Masters, the period drama replaced its fellow Showtime series Homeland, which failed to make the cut for the first time since it first premiered.

Also absent for the first time in five years was awards favorite Modern Family. The only half-hour comedy recognized was HBO's Veep.
Other shows include Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Game of Thrones, first-time honoree Scandal and The Good Wife, which had been left off the list last year.
AFI also announced its top 10 films of the year on Monday. Two Tom Hanks films, Captain Phillips and Saving Mr. Banks, made the list, as did box office smash Gravity. 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle, Fruitvale Station, Her, Inside Llewyn Davis, Nebraska and The Wolf of Wall Street were also named.
