Beauty and the Beast

ABC has bought a one-hour drama based on the classic Beauty and the Beast story, TVGuide.com has learned.

Tentatively titled Beauty and the Beast, the drama is an epic re-imagining of the fairy tale, which would fit right in on the network that's bringing Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) to life on new series Once Upon a Time.

Jonathan E. Steinberg will write and executive-produce the series alongside Gary Fleder and Mary Beth Basile, who's the writing partner of Liz Tigelaar, now a writer on Once Upon a Time.

In the classic tale, Belle is the youngest daughter of a merchant who has become indebted to the Beast. To fulfill the obligation, she returns to stay in the Beast's enchanted castle, where each night, he asks her to marry him. Beauty and the Beast has been adapted several times, including an Oscar-winning Disney film and the '80s TV series starring Linda Hamilton. More recently Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens starred in Beastly, a modern-day take on the tale.
