Medium Episode Recap: "Bring Me the Head of Oswaldo Castillo"

In the season finale of Medium, Mexican drug cartels, dead cops and dirty federal agents intermingle with brain tumors, arguments and lunch notes. This was a hard episode to watch with the blood and violence, but also for the sadness of Allison's condition.

Allison walks into an apartment complex, checks her mail, and enters her apartment — a picture of the family hangs on the wall. We know she is dreaming and it's not pretty. A visitor arrives with dinner, and we soon find out he is a federal agent working on the case to find the man who massacred her family and murdered his wife.

Marie takes a napkin out of her lunch to read the note her mom left her in her bag. I never knew she dropped sweet notes into her daughters' school lunch bags. But it was one touching moment in a very sad Medium. It becomes more important when Marie can't read one note and hands it to her father and he sees that Allison's handwriting has deteriorated into a garbled mess. He becomes very concerned for his wife.

She also suffers a bad headache. As it grows worse, she becomes irritable and starts to have trouble speaking and writing. This leads to a diagnosis of a brain tumor pressing on her brain and causing the symptoms.

Meanwhile, the dreams of her family's demise force Allison and Joe to argue mercilessly. Allison is certain that she has to do something to save her family, but Joe refuses to accept the fate she is dreaming for them and fights her every inch of the way.

Joe takes Allison to the hospital and her situation is so urgent that the surgery is scheduled for the following morning. But when Joe arrives that day, Allison has disappeared to the aforementioned apartment complex. Based on the dreams she is having she knows that the surgery will stop her dreams and visions, denying her the gift she has been given. She's terrified that she will not be able to stop the carnage from happening.

Once Allison has flown the hospital coop, she goes somewhere to sleep so she can find a way to stop Oswaldo from killing Joe and the girls. She dreams that Agent Munoz has been in cahoots with Oswaldo, accepting money from him even though the guy killed his wife. She has gone to Castillo's to kill him, and finds Munoz there. She blows the place up with all three of them in there. And then wakes up.

Sitting in the D.A.'s conference room, looking like death warmed over, she confronts Munoz and hands him over to the DA for a nice long life in jail. He is to give up Castillo and once again, peace and justice is restored.

Finally, Allison is back at the hospital, and in surgery. A tired and bereft Joe is waiting to hear how it went. Fresh from surgery, the doctor, (played by Deirdre Lovejoy of the phenomenal series The Wire) appears and tells Joe the good news that the operation went very well and what they couldn't get with surgery, they can destroy with radiation therapy. Then she tells him the bad news. Allison is in a coma and there is no likelihood that she will wake any time soon. It is a harsh reality for Joe to bear. Even if she does wake, it's not known if she will be able to dream and intuit anymore.

This To Be Continued episode also marks the end of an era. NBC will no longer air Medium as it will be moving to CBS in the fall. Once again, it's been a pleasure to blog for you all. See you in the fall.
