Jon & Kate Episode Recap: "Kate's Birthday Surprise," "Sun, Seashells and Scrapes"
Jon & Kate's fifth season continued Monday night with Jon and Kate again spending much of the episode apart. The first of two new episodes focused on Kate's birthday, which took place in March, and which Jon missed due to a snowboarding vacation in Utah.
"I just wanted to get back out there and ride with my friends," Jon said. "It just happened to fall on Kate's birthday."
For her birthday, Kate and the kids visited Charm City Cakes, owned by Food Network personality and star of Ace of Cakes Duff Goldman. Though the kids were all smiles, Kate admitted to some sadness.
"It was a little depressing, I guess," she said. "Jon's away, so it's kind of sad."
Many of the interview segments again featured Jon and Kate separately. Though the couple did appear together elsewhere in the episode, they were often separated by their daughter Madelyn. "This season, sometimes you'll see Kate and I interview separately. Sometimes you'll see us interview together on the chair," Jon explained. "It depends how things are going. We have busy schedules."
The second episode saw Jon staying at home with the kids as Kate and Madelyn had a girls' only spa vacation in San Diego. During the trip, Alexis — one of the sextuplets — took a tumble in the woods. As a result, she bit through her lip, prompting a doctor's visit and a phone call to Kate. The couple also explained that they usually don't call each other when one of them is on the road.
"No news is good news," Kate said.
