Quantum of Solace — Blu-ray Review

Quantum of Solace (Blu-ray)

Believe the promotional taglines: Bond is better on Blu-ray. While we have some issues with the film itself, the 22nd James Bond adventure, Quantum of Solace, looks and sounds absolutely stunning in its high-definition release.

Picking up right where Casino Royale left off, the film follows 007 (Daniel Craig, who's as rakishly charming as he was in his rookie Bond outing) on his mission to sniff out the mysterious organization behind the death of Vesper Lynd, his double-crossing fair lady. Of course, he does so in style, gun-fighting and car-chasing his way halfway around the globe, before ultimately going to-to-toe with Dominic Green, an environmentalist who's hoarding the fresh water supply in hopes of eventually controlling the world. The breakneck-paced movie barely pauses for a breather, but the middle is a little muddy and the whole endeavor seems like it needs to turn the Bond-ness up a notch.

Still, the high-def transfer is gorgeous (as are Bond babes Olga Kurylenko and Gemma Arterton), and the audio will make your surround sound soar. Specifically, you should crank it up during James' impromptu flying lesson, the fire-filled climax, and that one-of-a-kind fight sequence that makes falling through glass ceilings look more fun than it should. The special features, however, are not so thrilling. There's nothing here that you can't also get on the standard DVD release. And while the on-location featurette, the tons of extra little production goodies and an HD version of the music video for "Another Way to Die," Jack White and Alicia Keys' theme song, are entertaining enough, anyone less than a Bond die-hard might be better served by waiting to buy the inevitable special edition. (In the meantime, a rental is acceptable — and recommended.)
