Dexter: The Complete Second Season Blu-ray

If you're a fan of Dexter, you're in for a bloody good time.

The second season of this acclaimed Showtime hit (still this reviewer's favorite of the series), comes to life in HD. Every drop of blood and city shot Miami leaps off the screen in crystal-clear high-definition that is matched with an amped up a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD audio track. Mix that with our favorite blood spatter expert/serial killer nearly getting caught by Det. Doakes and fending off an attack from a beautiful-but-deranged new lover, and you have an excellent reason to spend a weekend on the couch with this one.

The bad news is this: The special features are almost unbelievably poor. The only that actually comes on the disc is a weird trivia game that really doesn't even have a reward. The rest (episodes of United States of Tara, "Dark Avenger" shorts, podcasts and featurettes) must be accessed from BD-Live. Worse, the interviews and featurettes are all from the DVD release and aren't in HD. Plus, Showtime hosts them, which means if the plug is pulled on BD-live, you're out of luck.

If you're looking to catch up on the series before it returns (you'll also need Seasons 1 and 3, the latter of which releases August 18), you should definitely consider watching the stunning HD versions. But unless you plan to watch the episodes repeatedly, a rental should suffice.
