What's left to be said about Avatar, the highest-grossing box office smash in history?
Judging by this release, not much. Although the Blu-ray treatment makes this an astonishing filmmaking spectacle even without the 3-D glasses, there is zilch in the way of bonus features. (They're no doubt being saved for a bigger release scheduled during the holiday season.) Even so, given all the years it took to make this film, it would have been nice to see at least a couple behind-the-scenes featurettes.
That said, the movie looks and sounds incredible. If you missed it in the theater (and you might be the only one) or even if you're re-watching, you can't help but marvel at James Cameron's technical achievement. And judging by the DVD/Blu-ray's record-shattering sales, that's been reason enough for many to bring this one home.
Bottom line: If you just want to watch the movie, rent this. If you want to fully immerse yourself in Pandora's glory, save your pennies (or ask Santa) for the sure-to-be-blockbuster special edition.
