Fastlane: Peter Facinelli, Tiffani Thiessen and Bill Bellamy courtesy Warner Bros. Television

OK, so how cool is our new DVD blog? Fancy, huh? And once I'm done ya'll need to send me your picks so we can all commiserate later on, aiiight?Models Inc. — Laugh all ya’s want, but 1994’s cheesoid Melrose spin-off had a pre-"Matrix" Carrie Ann Moss and a wedding-day sniper cliffhanger that Aaron Spelling himself told me was resolved in the UK version of the finale. Once a month he’s all “find me that show!” Honestly, the Sid & Marty Krofft Saturday-morning head trip about a talk... read more

Has Blu-ray Finally Beat HD DVD for Good?

The Sopranos - Season 6 Part 2 [Blu-ray] courtesy HBO Home Video

HBO has joined the parade to Blu-ray after Warner Bros, its distributor, announced on Friday that they were dropping HD-DVD in May 2008. The Warner Bros announcement could be the event that ends the war between high-definition formats. HD-DVD has the exclusive support of Universal and Paramount/DreamWorks, while Blu-ray has Fox/MGM, Warner Bros, Disney, Sony and Lionsgate. Warner Bros, which holds about 20 percent of the market, was a huge win for the Blu-ray group, and leaves Blu-ray with roughly 75 percent of the HD market. The Warner Bros decision has influenced New Line, along with HBO, to make the switch to Blu-ray, but BBC Home Video is bucking the trend and "will evaluate the marketplace before committing to one format" (according to the studio); the studio has four high-definition releases planned for 2008, available on both formats, and has sold more copies of Planet Earth on HD-DVD. Recent notable Blu-ray releases include The Simpsons (Fox), Pirates of the Caribbean: At Wo... read more

MI-5: Season 5 — Review

MI-5, Volume 5 courtesy BBC Video

The British equivalent of the FBI, MI-5 is the UK’s domestic security agency. MI-5 kicks off the fifth season with an explosive two-part special which sees Britain on the verge of anarchy. A series of sinister terror strikes, combined with chronic fuel shortages, has plunged Britain into crisis. As a desperately weakened Prime Minister fights to hold onto power, the public mood turns increasingly anarchic. MI-5 supremo Harry Pearce (Peter Firth) and team leader Adam Carter (Rupert Penry-Jones) begin to face the horrifying possibility that the country is under attack from sinister forces right at the heart of the establishment. So begins a dangerous game of bluff and counter-bluff. This 5 disc set includes all 10 episodes from the 5th season, plus 2 commentary tracks, a trailer for season 5, sneak peek for season 6, and some cast interviews. The Riches: Season 1 — Review

The Riches: Season 1 coutesy 20th Century Fox

In this compelling, oddball dramedy, a family of traveling grifters stumbles onto a way to change their lives (by less than legal means) and become "the Riches," settling down for a bit to see how the other half lives. What Dahlia Malloy (Minnie Driver, who received a Golden Globe nod for the role) and her husband, Wayne (the hilarious Eddie Izzard) discover is that living on the straight and narrow is not as easy as they might have thought. The first season's 13 episodes appear on four discs, with audio commentaries from Izzard and the show's creator, Dmitry Lipkin, as well as a gag reel (yay!) and a couple of other features. — Nina Hämmerling Smith Buy The Riches: Season One on Amazon.com. read more
