This week we're in Middleburg, Fla. to meet the Prewitt-Brewer family that consists of Carrie Prewitt and the three girls, Ashley, Taylor and Gina. Carrie Prewitt has been at the same high school as a teacher and a coach for the last 25 years. She is a mentor, she is an amazing coach and she's like a second mom to everyone she coaches there. Coach Prewitt first met Ashley when she coached her at the high school in volleyball and through that experience, she met her two younger sisters, Taylor and Gina.
These three girls lost both of their parents and were very close to becoming orphans and potentially being separated from each other. When Carrie heard of the situation with the girls, she didn't think twice about taking them in as part of her family. Since then, this family has been together every second. To me, this is one of those stories where everybody wins. The girls desperately needed a family, a home and a mother. Carrie who always wanted to have kids and couldn't suddenly was blessed with this amazing family. So I feel like everybody wins in this situation and now we're here to put the icing on the cake and give them a safe and comfortable home to call their own.
Since this is hurricane country, one of Carrie's biggest fears has always been that a hurricane hits and the house would not be able to withstand it. We're making sure that that's not a worry anymore. We're building this new house to make sure that it's as safe and sound as it can possibly be and of course adding those special extreme touches as well. Helping us out are thousands of community volunteers and our wonderful builders J.A. Long Construction and Ark Remodeling group.
We did a lot of crazy, extreme things this week. You know how growing up your mom has always told you don't play ball in the house? Well, this week, Mom, we're playing ball in the house. So Ty and the other designers start throwing volleyballs all over the place. They're spiking them, taking down old walls, breaking windows and doing some pretty awesome stuff. But I had something a little bigger up my sleeve. I thought maybe I'd bring in the big guns. You guys will just have to watch this Sunday though to see what I'm really talking about.
Each week we get to surprise a family, but this week it was our time to get a surprise as well. Before we start to take the house down, we get together and we have a meeting. We talk about what our plans are, what we want to do, what we've learned from the family, and really just have a great design meeting. Well, right in the middle of this meeting, Ty says that we're going to have some special guests and I'm thinking it's going to be a celebrity mom or something. Never did I think what happened was going to happen.
All of a sudden MY MOM turns the corner, and she just had this big grin on her face like she'd been keeping a secret for a while. It was just awesome and so great to have her be with me this week. She's always supported me my entire life and I love her to pieces. Also, my mom's a huge fan of this show. She's never missed one episode so for her to be here and sort of be honored as a mom and be a part of it all pretty special for her... and it's special for me.
When I think about what Carrie did, it's a beautiful thing. I can't imagine not growing up with a mother. My mother's always has been my rock and my support system through my entire life and I'm just so happy that the tide is changing for these girls. With Mother's Day coming up it's really a great time for all of us to reflect on the sacrifices that our mothers made for us. They say that there's nothing that a mother wouldn't do for their son, and I feel that from my mother, and I think it's really important to let all the mothers out there know that we recognize that, and feel it, and let them know how much they are loved.
