Are you ready for the post-Paula American Idol?

Simon Cowell will leave American Idol, his brother says

Fox announced that the ninth season, slated to begin Jan. 12 with a two-night premiere, will begin with auditions in Boston and Atlanta. Filling Abdul's chair during the auditions across the country are guest judges including Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige, Kristin Chenoweth, Neil Patrick Harris, Joe Jonas, Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry, and Shania Twain.

The auditions will continue through Feb. 9 when the "Hollywood Round" (where the 12 female and 12 male contestants are determined) begins and new judge Ellen DeGeneres joins the mix. The 24 semifinalists will then be announced on Feb. 17 and the first performance show begins Feb. 23 with the ladies, followed by the guys on Feb. 24.

Both genders finally compete against one another on March 16.

One thing Fox didn't include in its announcement about plans for the new season: any mention of a "Wild Card" round. In past seasons, the round gave the judges more power to save competitors.

A call to show reps about the round wasn't immediately returned.
