"I am going to be the new judge on American Idol," Ellen DeGeneres announced on her talk show on Wednesday.
It was no joke: TVGuide.com has confirmed that DeGeneres is set to take on a full-time, permanent judging spot on Fox's hit reality series.

Reps tell us that Fox is looking to DeGeneres' softer side to counteract Kara DioGuardi's sometimes harsher tone. "Hopefully I'm the people's point of view because I'm just like you. I sit at home and I watch it and I don't have that technical... I'm not looking at it in a critical way from the producer's mind," DeGeneres said.
DeGeneres guest-judged on an episode of So You Think You Can Dance this summer, contributing to huge ratings.
"I'm not leaving here," DeGeneres said of her daytime talk show. "Don't worry about that. I'm going to have a day job and a night job."
