For the first time in American Idol history, a select number of contestants were chosen early for the top 24.

On Tuesday's episode, judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, Kara DioGuardi and Ellen DeGeneres pored over photos of the contestants as they pondered their fates.

"There's so many good singers," DeGeneres said. "And we keep saying, you made it this far, so you're know you're good. It's not about being a good singer. It's about star power, presence ..."

Idol to reveal partial list of top 24 on Tuesday

The first seven top 24 contestants: Michael Lynche (Orlando auditions), Didi Benami (Los Angeles auditions), Katelyn Epperley (Chicago auditions), Casey James (Denver auditions), Aaron Kelley (Orlando auditions), Lee Dewyze (Chicago auditions) and Todrick Hall (Dallas auditions).

Ryan Seacrest announced the remaining 17 — 10 women, seven men — will be revealed Wednesday night.
